The €2 commemorative coin "1275th birthday of Charlemagne" pays tribute to the Frankish king and Roman emperor, who is regarded as the progenitor of Europe and an important patron of education and culture. Charles was committed to improving education in his empire. Charlemagne died on 28 January 814 in Aachen. Soon after his death, the transfiguration into an important and ideal ruler began. Even though the European Union today is larger than his empire, Charlemagne still stands for the idea of a united Europe. Since 1950, the city of Aachen has awarded the Charlemagne Prize to personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the unification of Europe.
